RIASEC Career Interests

The RIASEC model (also called Holland Codes) maps your interests across six career-relevant dimensions. Your top 2-3 dimensions form your Holland Code, which predicts career satisfaction and fit.

It measures six dimensions of vocational interest: Realistic interests focus on hands-on, practical work like engineering. Investigative interests center on analytical problem-solving, such as data science. Artistic interests involve creative expression, like graphic design. Social interests are driven by helping and teaching others, such as counseling. Enterprising interests focus on leading and persuading, like sales or entrepreneurship. Conventional interests emphasize organizing and managing data, such as accounting.

It does not capture your full capability profile or determine a single correct career path. Having a high interest in an area does not automatically translate to possessing the raw skills or aptitude required for that domain. It also does not measure work ethic, resilience, or how well you might adapt to roles outside of your primary interests.

Pattern uses RIASEC as an applied lens that connects how you naturally think to the kind of work environments you may want more of. When combined with your cognitive performance data, your Holland Code helps identify candidate environments where your intrinsic interests align with how you process information. This dual approach ensures you are pointed toward roles that feel genuinely energizing rather than draining.

Developed by John Holland, the RIASEC framework is the most widely used model in vocational psychology. Holland proposed a hexagonal model where adjacent themes (like Social and Enterprising) share more similarities than opposing ones (like Social and Realistic). The science of the framework relies on three key constructs: Consistency (how closely related your top interests are on the hexagon), Differentiation (the magnitude of difference between your highest and lowest interests), and Identity (the clarity of your career goals). Decades of empirical research have demonstrated that aligning your Holland Code with an appropriate work environment significantly improves career satisfaction, stability, and overall performance. By matching your intrinsic interests to corresponding occupational demands, the RIASEC model provides a highly reliable, evidence-based predictor for finding work that feels genuinely energizing rather than draining.
